Gaibacher Kapellenberg is a vineyard in the Franconian region . It is located in the district of Volkacher hamlet Gaibach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .

Geographical location and geology

The vineyard is east of the village of Gaibach on the boundary of the Kolitzheim district of Zeilitzheim with the Heiligenberg vineyard. The district road KT 32 cuts through the vineyards, in the south it is bounded by the Volkach tributary Gaibach. The Gaibach new building area Am Kapellenberg limits the location in the southwest, the state road St 2271 runs further to the west. The eponymous chapel is some distance from the Kapellenberg.

The Gaibacher Kapellenberg lies on the edge of the so-called Sonnenberg, which is 280 m high there. The slope there is rather flat at 15%. Today the vines occupy an area of about 37 hectares, since the beginning of the 21st century the area has increased by about half. The mountain is oriented to the southeast or southwest and is formed by soils of the Upper Muschelkalks and the Lettenkeuper . Mostly Müller-Thurgau wines and Silvaner wines are grown there. The location is part of the major site Volkacher Kirchberg in area Volkacher Mainschleife .

history

Gaibach was not a typical wine-growing community in the past. However, the inhabitants of the place mainly operated viticulture as a sideline for their own needs. In 1780, 78 acres of the Gaibach district were still planted with vines. About a quarter of this area was in the hands of the village lords, the Counts of Schönborn . The general development of Franconian viticulture at the beginning of the 19th century also led to a gradual decline in Gaibach.

Because of the mediatization of the count's possessions, a large wine buyer fell away. At the same time, beer rose to become the most important luxury item on the Mainschleife. With the emergence of phylloxera , viticulture in Gaibach almost completely collapsed. In 1978 only 1.6 hectares were planted with vines on Kapellenberg. The name, which refers to the proximity to the Gaibacher Kreuzkapelle , was probably created at this time .

Wineries (selection)

Several well-known wineries now own vines on the Gaibacher Kapellenberg. In addition to some locally recognized companies, there are also a number of nationally known wine growers and excellent goods:
