At the Charles University in Prague, Saudek first studied philology from 1974 . From 1977 to 1983 he studied piano with Anna Machová, conducting with Jiri Chvala and composition with Jiří Dvořáček at the Prague National Music Academy . His diploma thesis was dedicated to the work of Svatopluk Havelka .

He lived in Prague and Paris , studied composition and electroacoustic music with Guy Reibel at the Paris Conservatory and electronic and computer music with Tristan Murail at IRCAM in Paris . Most of Saudek's works were commissions from Czech and foreign institutions, soloists and ensembles.

He was awarded the Leoš Janáček Prize of the Czech Music Society for his opera Memnon . For the Festival de L Ile-de-France, Saudek created Ausflug im Gebirge in 1986 (for 11 instruments, mezzo-soprano, to a text by Franz Kafka), which was successfully premiered by the Camerata de Versailles ensemble. For his work Shakespeare's Gestalten Saudek received the second prize in the Ostrava competition "Generation". He also received a second prize in the Young Composers Competition of the Czech Socialist Republic in 1986 for his symphony. He received a first prize for his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra In Memory of Gideon Klein (Saudek is the editor of Gideon Klein's work). Research on a dog , commissioned and often performed by the French ensemble L'Itinéraire, was part of the 1990 program of the Sienna New Music Festival.

Saudek's compositional focus is on orchestral, chamber and vocal music. He has a special connection to texts by Shakespeare and Kafka, which was established by his parents - the father Erik Adolf Saudek was a translator of Shakespeare works into Czech, the mother was Kafka's niece (daughter of Ottla Kafka ).
