Volker Himmelein

Volker Himmelein (born February 1940 in Pforzheim ) is a German art historian .

Volker Himmelein studied history, German, art history and political science in Tübingen and Freiburg . In 1965 he received his doctorate in Tübingen with Hubert Schrade with a dissertation on the portal of the Charterhouse of Champmol . In 1965 he became a volunteer at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe , in 1967 curator at the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart , where he was involved in the preparation of the state exhibition Die Zeit der Staufer 1977. From 1979 he worked again at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe and became its director in 1981, from 1981 to 1995 he also taught as a professor of art history at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. From June 1, 1991 to February 28, 2005 he was director of the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart.
