Volker Schurig (psychologist)

Volker Schurig (born January 4, 1942 in Leipzig , † January 19, 2014 in Lalibela , Ethiopia) was a German biologist , psychologist and retired professor of university didactics at the University of Hamburg . Schurig was a representative of critical psychology .

Life

Schurig attended the extended secondary school in Freiberg ( Saxony ) from 1956 to 1960 . He then studied biology (especially general zoology and animal physiology ) at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In his diploma thesis with the zoologist Manfred Gersch (1909–1981) he dealt with the holistic problem in animal germ development. Schurig moved to the Institute for Philosophical Problems in Natural Sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1966 . Here he received his doctorate under Hermann Ley in 1969 with a thesis on the application of bio-cybernetic methods in behavioral research. During his dissertation he worked closely with the behavioral scientist Günter Tembrock . Until 1971 Schurig worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Deep Sea Fishing and Fish Processing in the Rostock Fish Combine .

As a result of the years after the Prague Spring , Schurig left the GDR in 1971 . Until 1976 he worked in West Berlin as an assistant professor at the Psychological Institute of the Free University . There he completed his habilitation in 1975 with research on the origin of consciousness in human evolution. Schurig received a professorship for philosophy of science at the Interdisciplinary Center for University Didactics (IZHD) at the University of Hamburg in 1977 and worked there until his retirement in 2007.

Schurig's natural history of the psychic and the emergence of consciousness are considered to be important forerunners of Klaus Holzkamp's major work, Fundamentals of Psychology .
