Athletic career

Three weeks after his 24th birthday, Volkmar Woßmann appeared for the first time in high-class football in the GDR. On October 24, 1970, the 9th game day of the league, he played his first game in the top class for the company sports community (BSG) Stahl Riesa. In the 5-0 away defeat at BFC Dynamo , he was called up as a striker. By the end of the season he had 17 league stakes. He scored his first point goal for Riesa on matchday 18 in the home game against 1. FC Magdeburg . At 2-2 he had scored the opening goal. He scored his second goal of the season on matchday 21 in a 3-1 away win against BSG Chemie Leipzig. In his second league season, Woßmann was a regular for Riesa from the start. He played all 26 league games as a striker, but had little success with only one goal as an attacker. When BSG Stahl was determined to be relegated at the end of the season, Woßmann ended his career in Riesa.

In the summer of 1972 he joined the neighboring TSG Gröditz , which had just been promoted to the second-rate GDR league . There Woßmann developed into a constant regular player and reliable goal scorer. With TSG he initially played seven seasons in the GDR league. In the 152 league games during this time, he was used 135 times and scored 42 goals. In 1974 and 1976 he was TSG's top scorer with six and fifteen goals respectively. This had to relegate to the district league in 1979 , but managed to get promoted again with the help of Woßmann. As an almost 34-year-old, Woßmann started his last season in competitive sports in 1980. Of the 22 league games, he played ten more games, but was the only time in his career without a goal.
