location

The Volksbad is located in the Bungtwald, an extensive nature reserve in the Bungt district east of the city center of Mönchengladbach . It is located in the north of the district, northeast of the Volksgarten .

architecture

The buildings of the public bathing facility, which is extensively equipped with extensive sunbathing areas and playgrounds , are built on a T-shaped floor plan . They used to consist of two large swimming pools , namely the sports pool (100 × 20 m) in the south and the bathing or paddling pool (100 × 30 m) in the north. Later, the sports pool and the bathing pool were each divided into two pools of 50 meters in length. With seven, originally even eight starting blocks , the sports pool used to have the dimensions required to host international championships. In 2009 the pools were extensively rebuilt, with a 50-meter-long sports pool and an approx. 13 × 10-meter pool with 1 and 3-meter diving boards in the south, and an 80 × 25-meter pool with a slide in the north a children's paddling pool.

Between the north and south swimming pools is the east-west oriented and symmetrically designed company building with a length of 107 meters. The striking reinforced concrete skeleton building is characterized by the rhythmic sequence of its reinforced concrete pillars, the arcades in the central building , which were previously closed - and the axially symmetrical design of the building, which acts as a block, with its changing and technical functions. The central building houses a cloakroom on the ground floor and a water tower . They are flanked on both sides by two elongated, single-storey halls with two-storey corner buildings under small hipped roofs with crown-like roof ventilators.

Offices are located in the western corner building, the eastern corner building contains the toilets on the ground floor and equipment rooms on the upper floor. The roof areas above the single-storey halls are designed as terraces . They are accessed from each side of the pool by two wide stairs . They allow a view of the entire facility and hold 800 visitors . The outdoor pool is designed for a bathing visit by a total of 2,000 people.

Offset to the north, on both sides of the central company building, there are two further single-storey structures built in 1929 under a mansard hipped roof with roof vents, in which technical rooms are housed. The building of the former sand trap on the east side is structurally missing.

The grounds of the Volksbad, which was fenced in on all sides, had a servants' house at each of the two former main entrances, of which the building in the west had to be demolished in 2003 due to severe structural damage. Only the residential building in the south-east with the address Peter-Krall-Straße 65 has been preserved. A single-storey building rises above a square floor plan under a hipped tent roof covered with dormer windows . The two tall rectangular windows in each of the facades , the frames replaced in cross division, have shutters . To the east there is a gate system divided by wall pillars, the middle, two-wing gate of which is accompanied by a narrow pedestrian entrance on each side. The gate system connects to an annex building that is assigned to the residential building in terms of formal design , also under a hipped tent roof.

The single-storey ticket booth under the flat roof of the main entrance on the west side of the property was only built in 1963. In 2004, an extensive parking lot was built directly south of the Volksbad between Peter-Krall-Straße and the outdoor area.
