Elementary school on Herterichstrasse

The elementary school on Herterichstraße (old building) is a listed building in the Solln district of Munich .

location

The building is located at Herterichstraße 41, at the corner of Stridbeckstraße. The area between the school and the new Catholic parish church of St. Johann Baptist to the northwest forms a sub-center next to the old village center and a connection between the village center and the villa colony of Solln . The school, the church and the adjacent Catholic rectory were designed by the same architect and form a stylistic ensemble.

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, the building of the old village school (today Kurzbauerstraße 15) had become too small, mainly because of the population that had grown due to the construction of the villa colony. In 1910 the architect Franz Rank , who had previously also built the new Catholic parish church, received the order for a new school building. The building was completed in 1911 and inaugurated under the name Luitpoldschule (named after Prince Regent Luitpold ).

In the following decades the building was used not only as a school, but also for other purposes, for example as a community office, warehouse and branch of a savings bank. After Solln was incorporated into Munich in 1938, the school was renamed Primary School of the City of Munich . In 1947 it was named Volksschule on Herterichstrasse .

In 1956 the architect Ernst Maria Lang completed an extension next to the school .

Building

The building is in Baroque Art Nouveau style with a local influence. It has a broad hipped roof and a protruding part of the building with a pointed gable in the middle . On one side of this is the entrance behind a row of arches, in front of it is the sculpture Reading Children , created in 1920 by Karl Lösche .

The extension from 1956 is connected to the old building by a bridge.
