Down from the high Olympus
From Hoh'n Olymp down is a serious student song by Heinrich Christian Schnoor .
Emergence
Schnoor wrote the song that is still known today in Halle (Saale) . Probably first published in the lost musical bouquet of flowers for connoisseurs and lovers , it found its way into all Kommers books . In the preserved selection of the most excellent round and friendship chants (Nuremberg 1795, p. 164) it begins with the words: From the high seat of gods we got joy. The present-day form is reminiscent of the Masonic song Vom Olympus, joy was sent to us, happiness was sent to us . It is first found in Wilhelm Schneider's Commersliedern (Hall 1801).
In the silent mourning bars for late connecting students the fifth verse is sung as a single song. In the corps , the funeral salamander is then "rubbed" in the air.

The doctor and writer Johann Georg Hertel (1801–1874) - Magister Reimlein - described a student funeral in Erlangen:
“Close a circle around the grave and sing the funeral song that
was usually sung when a student passed away!
Says it and the friends group closes a close
circle around the open grave and the boy's mouth floats dully.
The old beautiful verse: We cry into the
friend's grave and wish him peace and quiet. "
Frisian anthem
To the melody of the song Eeltsje Hiddes Halbertsma wrote the new lyrics De âlde Friezen . Revised by Jacobus van Loon , it became the Friesland anthem from 1875 .
