Wilhelm Schneider (composer)

Johann Georg Wilhelm Schneider (born October 5, 1781 in Rathenow , † October 17, 1811 in Berlin ) was a German pianist and composer .

Schneider was the son of an organist. From the age of six he received a musical education and attended the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin. He later studied theology in Halle . From 1806 he was successful as a pianist in Berlin. He also mastered the violin , viola and violoncello . As a composer, Schneider was primarily known for his piano works and songs. Most of his songs, however, appeared only after his early death from consumption in 1811.

Schneider left two operas , 23 piano works and over 50 songs , including many settings of works by Goethe . The best known is the setting of the ballad " The King in Thule ", which was published in 1805.
