Eeltsje Hiddes Halbertsma (born October 8, 1797 in Grou , † March 22, 1858 ibid) was a Dutch - Frisian writer. Halbertsma is the author of the unofficial Frisian hymn De âlde Friezen .

Life

Halbertsma studied medicine in Leiden and Heidelberg . From 1818 he worked as a doctor in Purmerend and later until 1854 in his home town of Grou. Together with his brothers Justus and Tsjalling Hiddes Halbertsma, he initiated the movement of Neo-Friesian literature ( De Fryske Bewegungsing ). You were among the first to combine romantic ideas directly with Frisian folk tales. Her collection Rimen en Teltsjes (poems and stories) is a West Frisian classic to this day. In 1822 the West Frisian song collection De Lapekoer fen Gabe Scroar (The Rag Basket by Gabe Schneider) appeared for the first time . In addition to these, Eeltsje Halbertsma wrote numerous own Frisian stories. In 1857 he translated Klaus Groth's collection of poems Quickborn from Low German into West Frisian.
