Justus or Joast Hiddes Halbertsma (born October 23, 1789 in Grou near Leeuwarden , † February 27, 1869 in Deventer ) was a Dutch - Frisian philologist and Mennonite preacher .

Life

Halbertsma studied theology and then became a pastor in Mennonite congregations in Bolsward and later in Deventer. In 1858 Halbertsma published the first Frisian translation of the Gospel of Matthew and in 1834 began to establish a binding orthography for West Frisian . As a literary historian, he wrote several treatises, among other things, in two volumes about the Frisian Renaissance - poet Gysbert Japicx ( Hulde aan Gijsbert Japiks ).

Together with his brothers Eeltsje and Tsjalling Hiddes Halbertsma, he initiated the movement of New Friesian literature ( De Fryske Bewegungsing ). You were among the first to combine romantic ideas directly with Frisian folk tales. Her collection Rimen en Teltsjes (poems and stories) is a West Frisian classic to this day.
