Emergence

The location of Von-Großheim-Platz (marked by a red circle)

After the death of the Lübeck-born architect Karl von Großheim , the city council decided at the beginning of 1912 to create a park in honor of the deceased. For this purpose, a previously unused property was offered, which was located directly opposite the house at Bäckerstrasse No. 21, where Großheim had spent his childhood. The area in front of the Wilhelm Theater had served as a pig trough until 1847, then was drained and has been fallow ever since.

The conveniently located property was redesigned in the course of 1912 to a park area surrounded by hedges , in which four existing and officially protected old linden trees were included. The main element of the park was an Art Nouveau- style fountain made of shell limestone with a central basin, over which there was a portrait relief of Großheim and which was flanked on both sides by benches. On December 29, 1912 Von-Großheim-Platz was inaugurated and opened to the public.

Destruction and restoration

During the Second World War , the park was completely removed in 1942 and a concrete basin for extinguishing water was sunk into the ground in its place . The fountain remained in place but was shut down. The extinguishing water pond, rarely cleaned and covered with wire mesh as protection against accidents, was only dismantled in 1990 and the park was restored. In the course of 1991 the fountain was restored. The Possehl Foundation assumed DM 15,000 of the costs of 23,000 D-Marks ; another 5000 DM was donated by an anonymous resident. On July 30, 1991, the renewed well was put into operation.

Name of the place

The official name of the facility, as it is also specified in the official Lübeck street directory, is Von-Großheim-Platz . However, there are variants such as Großheimpark or Carl-von-Großheim-Platz , if the park is even mentioned by name. Even Lübeck residents rarely know its name, which may be due to the fact that it is neither identified by name on city maps nor identified by a street sign, although it is one of the streets and squares of the city.
