Outer bailey

The outer bailey is a ruined castle in the village of Oberurnen , today part of the municipality of Glarus Nord in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland . It is the most important castle in the canton.

location

The ruin stands on a hill north of the village of Oberurnen. The north-west wall of the hall rises about 16 meters above the ground. The hall was a cuboid structure with a floor plan of 18 m × 21 m. The roughly 2 meter thick walls consist of roughly worked limestone blocks with carefully worked boss stones at the corners. A newer wall connects the two palas with a residential wing on the east side. A narrow kennel and two moats protected the castle to the south and west of the palaces . Traces of the foundations of a bridge over the north side of the inner trench are still visible. The gatehouse probably stood on the north side of the curtain wall . The palace was probably built at the end of the 13th century, while the curtain wall, the Zwinger and other buildings date from the early 14th century.

history

In the High Middle Ages, the area around Oberurnen was owned by the Schänis Monastery and paid taxes to the Säckingen Abbey . 1264 inherited the Habsburg , the Bailiwick of Glarus by the Counts of Kyburg . About two decades later, in 1288, the Abbey of Säckingen also granted them a fief over the land of the abbey. In order to consolidate their rule over Glarus, the Habsburgs built Näfels Castle and probably also the outer bailey. Until about 1300 the castle was a Habsburg administrative center, in the middle of the 14th century it was the residence of the Austrian Habsburg Vogt Hermann III. from Breitenlandenberg .

In 1351 Glarus rebelled against the Habsburgs, attacked Näfels Castle and destroyed it. Perhaps the outer bailey was also attacked, although there is no record of it yet. Probably the castle was enlarged after the destruction of Näfels, either by the Habsburgs or by Glarus. It was documented in 1369 when a Rudolf Stucki pledged the castle as security. In 1386 it was mentioned as a refuge castle and was probably not regularly inhabited. In the 15th century it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Many stones bear witness to a great fire in the castle; but whether it was an accident or evidence of an attack is unknown.

The north-west wall of the tower was repaired and preserved in the 19th century. In 1940 the southern curtain wall was excavated and stabilized. During an archaeological excavation in 1970, traces of an outbuilding and a layer of animal bones were discovered.
