Vratislav Karel Novák

Vratislav Karel Novák (December 13, 1942 in Prague - February 12, 2014 in Jablonec nad Nisou ) was a Czech sculptor , jewelry designer, and art professor.

In 1961 Novák graduated from the jewelery school in Jablonec nad Nisou (metal engraving branch), 1961–1967 studied at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague with Prof. Jan Nušl. From 1990–2007 he taught at the Czech Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he ran a metal and jewelry studio. From 2007 to 2014 he taught at the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen .

Works

Prague metronome

Novák's objects are sometimes very complex mechanisms that use movement, light and / or sound. His work “Time Machine”, colloquially known as the Prague Metronome , is particularly well-known. It was erected on May 15, 1991 on the base of the Stalin memorial in Prague's Letná Park , which was demolished in 1962 .

During a stay at Miami University in Ohio between 2001 and 2002, he and the American artist Susan Rae Ewing created a 26 m high object, the “Crystalline Tower”. The Crystalline Tower is a monument to freedom and friendship in the Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park in Cincinnati on the Ohio River .

Novák also created works of metal and jewelry.

Prices

Novák has received several international awards. In 2001 he and Susan Rae Ewing won the international sculpture competition in Cincinnati for the “Crystalline Tower”. In 1996 he won a gold medal at the craft fair in Munich .
