The Saint Mark's Church in Vrba

Vrba (German Velben or Weideneck ) is a village in the Slovenian municipality Žirovnica in the Gorenjska region ( Upper Carniola ). Today it has 196 inhabitants (as of 2002). The village is 537 m above sea level.

Vrba was first mentioned in a document in 1247. In the center of the village is a linden tree . Sixteen stones are grouped around them, representing the sixteen former farmhouses in the village. Today only seven of them exist.

Vrba is best known as the birthplace of the Slovenian national poet France Prešeren (1800–1849), who was born there as the son of a wealthy farmer. The house where he was born, which bears the Slovenian name Pri Ribiču , has housed a museum on Prešeren's life and work since 1939 with numerous original pieces of furniture. A hundred years later, the future Archbishop of Ljubljana Anton Vovk (1900–1963) was born in the same house .

The originally Romanesque church of Saint Mark ( Cerkev sv. Marka ), which Prešeren immortalized in his work Sonetje nesreče , is worth seeing in Vrba . It was probably built around 1400 and is located just outside the village behind the Prešeren family's house. Its Gothic frescoes on the inner walls date from the 15th century.

A bust at the entrance to the village also commemorates France Prešeren.
