Vulfpeck is an American funk band from Ann Arbor , Michigan that was formed in 2011.

history

The band was formed in 2011 by Jack Stratton , Joe Dart , Theo Katzman and Woody Goss at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor .

The band quickly gained fame on YouTube , as they regularly published music videos for their songs, which were always produced in a markedly low technical quality. Most of the band's videos were made in rehearsal rooms and filmed with cell phones.

In 2014, the band caused a stir when they released Sleepify, an album on Spotify that consisted only of silence. With the fans playing the album in a loop at night, such a free tour should be financed. After an initial refusal, Spotify paid out the US $ 20,000 earned through the campaign, and the tour could actually take place.

After this action, Spotify changed the terms and conditions and removed the album from the platform.

On September 19, 2017, the band played their first German concert at the Astra in Berlin . The 1500 tickets for the concert were already sold out in advance.

Members

  • Jack Stratton grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and began playing drums at a young age. He was influenced by Bernard Purdie and The Meters . In college he ran a band called Groove Spoon. He is responsible for the management and production of Vulfpeck.
  • Joe Dart grew up in Harbor Springs, Michigan and started playing bass when he was 8 years old. He was influenced by Flea . In high school, he played in a Phish- inspired jam band. He names Pino Palladino , Rocco Prestia and Verdine White as his favorite bassists.
  • Theo Katzman grew up on Long Island , New York . As a teenager he played drums, guitar and wrote songs. In college he was a member of the band My Dear Disco. His solo works are inspired by folk and rock . In 2017 he released the album Heartbreak Hits.
  • Woody Goss grew up in Skokie , Illinois and began playing the piano at the age of 7. He was influenced by Thelonious Monk and was passionate about jazz and later funk . In college he performed with several bands. In 2016 he released the album Solo Rhodes.

Other Projects

In 2018 the band's own label Vulf Records released an EP by the Fearless Flyers Quartet, consisting of drummer Nate Smith , bassist Joe Dart and guitarists Cory Wong and Mark Lettieri as well as Sandra Crouch, Blake Mills and Elizabeth Lea. In 2019 the label released The Fearless Flyers II, the quartet's second EP with Chris Thile and Joey Dosik. Keyboardist Woody Goss released the album Strange Satisfaction together with Jeremy Daly in 2020 .
