The Vulkan Group ( spelling : VULKAN Group ) is an international group of companies in the drive technology and refrigeration and air conditioning sectors. The owner-managed group of companies has its headquarters in Herne in the Ruhr area . Today the company is active in more than 50 countries and has 19 subsidiaries, 50 agencies and five production sites worldwide.

history

The company's history began in 1889 with the establishment of the Louis Schwarz machine factory in Dortmund - Neuasseln . The company manufactured containers and refrigeration compressors primarily for the well-known Dortmund breweries . With the conversion of Schwarz & Co. Maschinenfabrik into a limited liability company and the entry of the Von der Heydt banking family in 1898, the basis for the production of clutches, lifting machines, winches and reverse gears was laid.

At the end of the First World War in 1918, the Heinrich Behrend company was taken over and the company was renamed Dortmunder Vulkan AG . The couplings are used in all types of transmission - rolling mills , cranes , ships, locomotives , presses and winches. The reverse gear designed by Otto Hegemann ushered in a new era in ship gear construction . The Hackforth & Co. machine factory in what was then Wanne-Eickel took over production for the Vulkan company in 1941. The Second World War ended the first chapter in the successful development of both companies. In 1945, reconstruction began on the site on Heerstrasse, the company's current headquarters.

A new era for the company began in 1951 with the license agreement with Waldemar Zadow. The company received the sole right to manufacture and sell a highly flexible coupling worldwide. The production of this patent-pending Vulkan EZ-Coupling started . In 1956 Bernhard Hackforth bought the company. The company's headquarters were officially relocated from Dortmund to Wanne-Eickel. In line with the progress made in the diesel engine sector , the range of flexible couplings was further developed up to torques of 220 k Nm . In 1967 the company manufactured the largest flexible coupling ever made.

Numerous subsidiaries have been established since the 1970s. The company, which was run as a sole proprietorship, was converted into a limited partnership (KG) and traded as Vulkan Kupplungs- und Getriebebau Bernhard Hackforth GmbH & Co. KG . The diversification began in 1978: Vulkan Lokring Rohrverbindungen GmbH & Co. KG was founded. In October 1977 Bernhard Hackforth handed over the sole management of Vulkan Kupplungs- und Getriebebau to his son Bernd Hackforth in order to concentrate on the management of the new Vulkan Group companies. In 2008 the operational business of the Vulkan Group was divided into three business areas: Vulkan Couplings, Vulkan Drive Tech and Vulkan Lokring. In 2011 the fourth generation takes on responsibility: Sebastian Hackforth becomes managing director. In 2015 Vulkan inaugurated the new company headquarters at the headquarters in Herne.
