Wladyslaw Niedźwiedzki

Władysław Marcin Niedźwiedzki also Niedźwiecki (born October 11, 1849 in Warsaw ; † February 6, 1930 there ) was a Polish lexicographer , ethnographer and teacher . He was one of the editors of the dictionary of the Polish language founded by Jan Karłowicz ( Słownik języka polskiego , 8 volumes, 1900-1927).

Life

Władysław Niedźwiedzki was born in Warsaw on October 11, 1849. After finishing secondary school in 1868, he began studying Slavic Studies at the University of Warsaw , which he completed in 1873. In the following years he worked on the Podręczna encyklopedia powszechna (Warsaw 1873-1875) by Adam Wiślicki . From 1878 he taught Polish at high schools in Warsaw and for a short time as a private teacher.

In 1891 he became a member of the editorial committee of the magazine “Wisła”. In the same year he began working on the dictionary of the Polish language ( Słownik języka polskiego ), which was founded by Jan Karłowicz. In 1896 he became editor of this dictionary and was responsible for sorting the material and the technical editing. After Karłowicz's death in 1903, the third editor, Adam Kryński, distanced himself from ongoing work because he did not agree with the methods and content given by Niedźwiedzki. Therefore, volumes 5 (1912) and 6 (1915) appeared through the collaboration of Niedźwiedzki with Kazimierz Król ; he finally published volumes 7 (1919) and 8 (1927) himself.

In 1910 he became a lecturer in Polish at the University of Warsaw.
