W. Murray Wonham (* 1934 ) is a Canadian system theorists and engineers for control technology .

Wonham received his bachelor's degree in physics engineering from McGill University in 1956 and his PhD in control theory from the University of Cambridge in 1961 . In the 1960s he was at the Control and Information Systems Laboratory of Purdue University , the Research Center of Martin Marietta , at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Brown University and the Office for Control Theory and Applications of Electronics Research Center of NASA . From 1970 he was in the group for control theory of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto , where he became a professor. He was also visiting professor at MIT , Washington University , the University of Bremen , the Mathematics Institute of Academia Sinica in Beijing, the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur .

He dealt with stochastic control and filters, geometric control theory in multiple variables, and the control of discrete event systems from the standpoint of mathematical logic and formal languages .

Wonham is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the IEEE , whose Control System Science and Engineering Award he received in 1987. In 1990 he received the Brouwer Medal .
