W. Royal Stokes

W. Royal Stokes (* 1930 in Washington, DC ) is an American classical philologist , ancient historian , radio presenter and jazz writer.

Live and act

Stokes grew up in Washington; in his parents' house was the jazz club Villa Bea in the 1940s . He was introduced to jazz through his brother's shellac records; In 1947 he attended a concert by Louis Armstrong . He studied classical philology at the University of Washington, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees; In 1965 he received his doctorate from Yale University on Homeric speech formulas. Until 1969 he was professor at the University of Pittsburgh , Tufts University , Brock University and the University of Colorado for Ancient Greek , Latin Language and Literature, and Ancient History . He then left academic operations and returned to his hometown; There he worked from 1972 to 1987 as a radio presenter for the radio stations WGTB and WPFW ( Pacifica Radio ).

From 1978 to 1986 Stokes wrote jazz reviews for the Washington Post ; he also wrote for JazzTimes , whose editor he was from 1988 to 1990. He was then editor of Jazz Notes , the quarterly magazine of the Jazz Journalists Association , of which he is a founding member. In addition, he wrote a number of books on the history of jazz , including two books with interviews, and from 1988 the liner notes for jazz albums and others. a. by Count Basie , Cecil Bridgewater , Jaki Byard , Benny Golson , Hal Galper , Paul Motian , Buell Neidlinger , Sun Ra, and Phil Woods .
