Like the other water maintenance associations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the WBV Ryck-Ziese was founded in 1992 by the law on the formation of water maintenance associations; it is based in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald . The district administrator of Vorpommern-Greifswald is responsible for the legal supervision of the association in accordance with the annex to § 1 GUVG.

His tasks do not include the maintenance of the state protection dikes or the maintenance of the navigable part of the Ryck from the Steinbecker bridge in Greifswald, which is a federal waterway from there .

A distinction must be made between the WBV Ryck-Ziese and the Zweckverband Wasser Abwasser BoddenCOAST (ZWAB), which is also active in the region but is responsible for drinking water supply and wastewater disposal for the municipalities.
