Hanshäger Bach in Kemnitz

The Hanshäger Bach (more rarely also Hanshagener Bach , in the lower half also called Kemnitz ) is a brook in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald .

Upper course

In the forest area of the eponymous municipality of Hanshagen , located south of the B 109 , the Brandmühlengraben coming from the municipality of Groß Kiesow , which is hydrologically to be regarded as the source of the stream, flows into the Schwarze Furtgraben , which also comes from Groß Kiesow, and another flowing water. The brook, bearing the name Hanshäger Bach from here , then runs along the municipal boundary and the edge of the forest to the northwest and finally turns north.

Middle course

The brook first crosses a field, bordered by a strip of grass, and then crosses under the B 109. On the section that follows, it already covers several meters of altitude difference before it reaches the mill pond of the Hanshagen watermill . The Bachtal near Hanshagen is a breakthrough valley cut into a terminal moraine , which has a gradient of 12 meters over a distance of about two kilometers. Since 1958, the valley , which runs from the southeast of the Hanshagen church in an arch to the watermill, has been protected as a natural monument "Heithörn".

From the mill, the stream flows further north through the “Hellbusch” forest to the Kemnitzerhagen district of the Kemnitz community , where it bears the name Kemnitz . Here it is dammed up to the small storage tank Kemnitzerhagen , one of the four open water storage tanks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This once served to supply the now decommissioned Lubmin nuclear power plant with process water . Today the storage facility is operated by the Ryck-Ziese Water and Soil Association. In the past, the brook in the area of today's small storage facility also drove a mill, first mentioned in 1248, which is mentioned as a paper mill in 1594. It burned down in the 17th century, but was rebuilt from 1697 to 1705 and was in operation as a grinding mill from 1856 until another fire in 1925. From the reservoir, the brook flows northwest through the districts of Kemnitzerhagen and Kemnitz, between which it also passes the railway line to Lubmin . In Kemnitzerhagen, it was also bridged by the Greifswald-Wolgast small railway line.

Lower course

In Kemnitz, it crosses the village street and flows through the village pond, which is a few meters lower, where there used to be a mill driven by the brook, which was still in operation in 1881. According to documents from the beginning of the 13th century, there were apparently four different water mills in Kemnitz. It flows further in an arc to the north, where it crosses under the L 26, and then flows into the western Ziese coming from the east . The stretch of the Ziese leading from here to the west was originally the lower reaches of the Hanshäger Bach and is therefore listed under the same water code number. Nevertheless, this section is mostly counted as Ziese today. The brook passes another sluice before it finally flows into the Danish Wiek of the Greifswalder Bodden . In the lower reaches of Neuendorf, too, the brook drove a mill from the 13th century, which fell into disrepair in 1535, but was then rebuilt as a fulling mill and was still in operation in the 17th century.
