The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is a research institution that is sponsored by the Forschungsverbund Berlin and a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Association (WGL). The institute is based in Berlin-Mitte and its research activities are in the field of applied mathematics and basic mathematical research .

Since February 2011 the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has had its secretariat, and thus also its seat, at WIAS.

history

The institute emerged from the "Karl-Weierstrass-Institute for Mathematics" of the former Academy of Sciences of the GDR . Based on a recommendation by the Science Council , the institute was re-established on January 1, 1992.

The institute is named after the Berlin mathematician Karl Weierstraß (1815–1897), who worked in Berlin from 1856 until his death and, in addition to making fundamental contributions to the theory of complex functions, also made a significant contribution to the logically founded analysis of analysis .

tasks

The task of the WIAS is to carry out project-oriented research in applied mathematics, in particular in applied analysis and applied stochastics . The research activity is based on specific application situations and is confirmed by cooperation with scientific institutions and industry. It encompasses the entire spectrum of problem solving, from mathematical modeling and mathematical-theoretical analysis of the models to the development of algorithms and the numerical simulation of technological processes.

The research focuses on the following key topics:

Within the main topics, questions are examined that are of central importance for the further development of key technologies (e.g. materials science , manufacturing technology , medical technology ) and for applications in the economy (e.g. finance or energy markets ).

Services are not part of the range of tasks.

Cooperations

The WIAS cooperates closely with university and non-university institutions and is involved in numerous joint research projects, for which additional funds are raised in the context of competition procedures (e.g. from the German Research Foundation or the European Commission ).

Intensive relationships are maintained with the three Berlin universities - Humboldt University , Technical University and Free University - through cooperation agreements and six joint appointments based on them .

Within the Leibniz Association, the WIAS coordinates the Leibniz Network “Mathematical Modeling and Simulation”, in which around 25 Leibniz Institutes are involved.

Infrastructure

The total budget of the institute in 2015 was 12.9 million euros, of which around 9.5 million euros were funded by the federal government and half by the federal states. About 150 people work in the institute.
