The locomotives of the class ВЛ15 (German transcription WL15) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are wide-gauge electric locomotives .

Series ВЛ15 (WL15)

After the positive experience with the prototypes of the ВЛ85 series for alternating current, a prototype for 3 kV direct current was also built in 1984 . The new series should serve as a more powerful successor to the series ВЛ10 and ВЛ11 in freight transport.

The locomotive body was built at the Novotscherkassk electric locomotive factory , the locomotive was completed in the Tbilisi electric locomotive factory . It was given the number ВЛ15-001. Like the prototypes of the ВЛ85 series, the ВЛ15-001 was designed as a twelve-axle double locomotive, with each half having three two-axle bogies. This construction principle had not previously been used in the Soviet Union . ВЛ15-001 was the most powerful direct current locomotive in the world at the time. It was first tried out on the test facility in Shcherbinka near Moscow and put into service in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg ) in 1985 .

Series production began in 1985 with ВЛ15-002. The ВЛ15 series was built until 1991. 44 ВЛ15 were delivered to the SŽD, four of which were designed as ВЛ15С. The series ВЛ15 remained completely in Russia when the Soviet Union was split up and thus came to the Russian Railways (RŽD).

Series ВЛ15С (WL15S)

The ВЛ15 cannot be coupled to larger units than the regular double locomotives due to their limited power consumption. The locomotives with the order numbers -024, -026, -028 and -032 received special equipment for use in units of three or four locomotive halves and were designated as the ВЛ15С (WL15S) series.

Series ВЛ15А (WL15A)

Six modified locomotives were delivered to the Apatitwerk railway in Apatity . They were given the numbers ВЛ15А-001 to -006.
