The water sports club Moers (WSV Moers) is a canoe club in Moers , which is organized in the German Canoe Association . The club was founded in Moers in 1973 by Klaus Lettmann and Jürgen Sachs together with 17 other canoe enthusiasts. Klaus Lettmann is still the honorary chairman of WSV Moers today.

The boathouse is located on the Schwafheimer Bergsee, where training also takes place in the summer months.

history

The initiative to found WSV Moers came from Klaus Lettmann and Jürgen Sachs. Together with 17 other canoeists, the club was founded on September 19, 1973. Bernhard Siebenbor was elected as the first chairman. After the association was founded, there was initially no area available where a boathouse could be built and canoe training could take place. In order to change this situation, the WSV Moers drew attention to this situation by participating in the Carnation Saturday parade in the 1974 Carnival in Moers and promoted the need to finally get a training opportunity. For this purpose, the members built their own moving van. In fact, the efforts were successful and in January 1975 the WSV Moers received the first training opportunities in the Rheinkamp wave pool and in winter in the 'Wilhelm Schröder' indoor pool .

But there was still no club area of its own. From the point of view of the association, only one plot of land with access to the water could be considered within Moers: the plot of land in Schawfheim, on Waldstrasse. 115. As a result of the territorial reform, many of the other properties that were initially selected were selected, as these now belonged to Duisburg and Duisburg did not want to give properties to any Moers association. The use of the Schwafheimer Bergsee was not without controversy, both the local fishing club and the NaBu were against the use of the lake by the canoeists of the WSV Moers. In August 1975 the WSV Moers was allowed to use the Schwafheimer Bergsee for canoe training, despite the resistance of bird conservationists and anglers.

In July 1976 the first boathouse of the WSV Moers was inaugurated, however a fire on March 23, 1977 destroyed the boathouse and all the boats stored there. But although the WSV was left with practically nothing, the club members continued, on May 21, 1979 the building application for a new boathouse was submitted. More than a year later, in September 1980, the foundation stone was laid for the new boathouse, which is still in use today.

In July 1981 the joint paddling day with the Lower Rhine Blindenwassersportgemeinschaft became an integral part of the WSV Moers program. This common paddling day continues to this day. In 1985 the cooperation with the youth village Niederrhein began, which is also continued to this day. In 2010 the Kanu-AG started as a cooperation with the Rheinkamp high school in Moers.
