A canoeing club (often called a canoe club or a canoe club ) is a sports club in which people interested in canoeing come together.

history

The oldest canoeing club is the Royal Canoe Club founded in 1866 by the Scottish lawyer John MacGregor .

In Germany the first canoe sports clubs emerged 19th century . In 1860, the Greenlander Club, the first German canoeing club, was founded in Breslau . The oldest German club still in existence today is the Alster Canoe Club from 1905. In the first third of the 20th century, many canoeists were affiliated with the rowing clubs that had existed for a long time , until independent canoe clubs were formed, particularly as a result of the workers' sports movement.

Club facilities

Due to the common need for a boathouse and a pier, there are not only pure canoe port clubs but also multi-branch clubs that offer canoeing together with rowing or sailing . There are also departments in larger sports clubs or clubs for water sports . In Germany there are around 1300 canoeing clubs (or departments), of which around 800 have their own boathouse.

Designations

The name of a canoeing club is usually made up of an abbreviation (e.g. KC) and the place name or the name of the district or the body of water where the club is based.

When doing competitive sports, some canoeists change clubs for better training conditions. Most of the time, these clubs are located at Olympic bases and performance bases.
