Wachtang Tschabukiani

Wachtang Tschabukiani ( Georgian ვახტანგ ჭაბუკიანი ; * 27 February July / 12 March  1910 greg. In Tbilisi ; † 6 April 1992 ibid) was a Georgian dancer and choreographer . His choreographies are attributed to the Soviet period with its turn to the interpretation of works of classical literature.

Life

Tschabukiani grew up as the fifth child of a carpenter in poor circumstances in Georgia. In 1924, after training in several ballet schools, he was accepted into the Tbilisi opera and ballet troupe. From 1926 to 1929 he studied at the Leningrad Choreographic Institute and then danced as a soloist at the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater until 1941 . In 1938 and 1939 he directed the first performances with his own choreographies at this theater.

From 1941 to 1973 Tschabukiani directed the Paliashvili opera and ballet theater in Tbilisi . 1950 to 1977 he taught at the choreography college as artistic director. From 1965 to 1970 he headed the Rustaveli Theater Institute . He directed the films Master Grusinskogo Baleta (German Master of Georgian Ballet , 1955) and Othello (1960).

Services

Like Rostislaw Sakharov and Leonid Lavrowski , Wachtang Tschabukiani built his plays according to the laws of drama . They were realistic and large-scale. The so-called dramatic ballet was born - the ballet drama .

In 1948 and 1951 he was awarded the Soviet State Prize and in 1958 the Lenin Prize. After his death he was buried on the Pantheon on Mtatsminda in Tbilisi .
