Wade Hampton II (born April 21, 1791 in Issaquena County , Mississippi , † February 10, 1858 ibid) was one of the richest plantation owners in South Carolina and an officer in the British-American War 1812-1815.

Life

Wade Hampton II came from one of the wealthiest families in South Carolina. His father, Wade Hampton I, was a well-known American politician, hero of the Revolutionary War, and general in the War of 1812 . He was also considered the richest plantation owner in the United States and owned more than 3,000 slaves. Wade Hampton II was also a soldier and fought in the War of 1812. In 1815 he served as Inspector General on the staff of General Andrew Jackson during the Battle of New Orleans .

After his father's death in 1835, he inherited a large part of his father's fortune. His Millwood mansion in Columbia was known for its beauty and elegance. One of his sisters was married to Governor Richard Irvine Manning . He himself married Ann Fitzsimmons in 1817, which he later got the politician James Henry Hammond as his brother-in-law . The marriage also resulted in the future Confederate general and governor of South Carolina, Wade Hampton III.

Wade Hampton II died in 1858. Like his father, he was considered a classic representative of the southern aristocracy before the Civil War .
