Horn , tuba , tenor horn

The Wagner tuba (also Wagner tuba , Horntuba , Ringtuba or Rheingoldtuba ) is a brass instrument .

The Wagner tuba belongs to the French horn family . The instrument has three or four valves and is blown with a French horn mouthpiece. The design is based on the tenor horn , the tuning as with French horns in Bb and F. The sound is somewhere between French horn and tenor trombone, but the bell pointing upwards achieves a better sound propagation in the room than the horn.

Wagner tubas are blown by horn players and gripped with the left hand. They usually appear in a sentence, i. H. Two tenor tubas in Bb (range B – f²) and two bass tubers in F (range F – a 1 ). The B-instruments have a tube length of 290 cm, the tube of the one tuned in F is 380 cm long.

Richard Wagner had it built for the Ring of the Nibelung around 1870. Wagner tubas were u. a. used by Anton Bruckner (in the 7th symphony in the 2nd and 4th movements, in the 8th symphony in the 1st, 3rd and 4th movements and in the 9th symphony in the 3rd movement). In the 8th and 9th symphonies there are always either eight horns or four horns and four Wagner tubas. In the Ring of the Nibelung , too, horn players 5–8 alternate between French horns and Wagner tubas. They are also used by Richard Strauss (e.g. in the operas Elektra and Die Frau ohne Schatten or in the symphonic poem Eine Alpensinfonie ). Igor Stravinsky uses them in Le Sacre du Printemps (two B-tubas) and in the first version (1911) of the ballet The Firebird . A solo work for Wagner tuba is a burlesque by the German composer Johannes X. Schachtner with the title Jägarna på Karinhall ( Die Jäger auf Karinhall ) - based on the title of the book of the same name by the Swedish author Carl-Henning Wijkmark .

Nowadays the Wagner tubas are rarely found in works of film music. An example would be the revision of the Universal Fanfare by Brian Tyler .
