Wahkonda is a German rock band from Frankfurt (Oder) . She achieved her greatest successes in the GDR at the end of the 1980s .

history

Wahkonda was founded in 1972 by Hans Georg Hansi Alt as an amateur band . The name of the band, which can be traced back to the interest of the band founder in the culture of the Indians , comes from Indian literature and has multiple meanings as Wakonda . The drummer's last name was Wahkowski. The singer Ralf Engel joined the band in 1977.

Although the band had been a professional formation since 1980, success did not materialize until the mid-1980s, when the first original compositions were written and produced on the radio of the GDR . Titles like A touch of tenderness by Wilfried Brummack or I need you achieved top spots in the rating programs and increasingly made the band known. TV appearances in the youth program round and a first foreign tour on the Druzhba route in the Soviet Union followed. In the autumn of 1984 the band with the title Will we go to me was featured on the GDR television program Stop! Rock winner.

In 1986 the band was given the opportunity to produce a single on the GDR label . Wahkonda also provided the music for the DEFA film Das Puppenheim in Pinnow . The song-like rock, the cheerful, ironic lyrics by Axel Hein and Bernd Ernie Lehmann and the band's stage show, in which Lehmann imitated Udo Lindenberg , were particularly well received by the young audience .

In the GDR annual hit parade in 1985, Wahkonda reached 20th place with the title Simply Nur so and in 1987 with Ich Such Dich took 17th place.

Even before the first album was recorded, Lehmann left the band. Wilfried Zaruba (guitar) came for him. After the reunification in the GDR, the band got quieter and in the early 2000s they broke up.

In 2008, the front man Engel reunited the band, which had already given several reunion concerts. The previous line-up of Engel, Hein, Siebke and Brummack has been joined by two new guitarists. At the same time, the Amiga heiress Sony / BMG released a CD with the band's greatest successes.

On October 5, 2011, band singer Ralf Engel committed suicide.
