Wajpamheros nourissati is a freshwater fish from the family of cichlids , which in the basin of the Usumacinta in southeastern Mexico and Guatemala occurs.
features
Wajpamheros nourissati reaches a length of 22 cm and is greenish dark in color. On the sides of the body there is a brown, triangular spot as well as vertical bandages, which stand out clearly, especially when excited. Females are generally darker and stay slightly smaller. The fourth and fifth band are divided (double), a feature that Wajpamheros nourissati shares with the closely related Theraps species. Wajpamheros nourissati , however, is much higher back than the slim Theraps species, which are adapted to life in fast-flowing waters , has a longer skull with a steep head profile and a terminal, pointed mouth with thick lips. The tail stalk is shorter.
Way of life
Wajpamheros nourissati lives at depths of one to four meters, often under submerged banks that are rich in hiding, on soft ground in which the fish search for food. Cribroheros robertsoni and various Thorichthys species live in the same lifelong dream, which also look for food on the bottom of the water. Like almost all heroine cichlids, Wajpamheros nourissati is an open breeder .
Systematics
The species was described in 1989 by the French biologist and aquarist Robert Allgayer under the name Theraps nourissati and named after the collector of the type specimens. Later she was assigned to Astatheros , Cichlasoma and Amphilophus . In 2016 the genus Wajpamheros was introduced, with Wajpamheros nourissati as the only species. The genus name is made up of wajpam and Heros . Wajpam means in the Chol language , an indigenous language in Mexico, 'muddy face' and is supposed to refer to the way the fish eats, in which the mouth is often stuck into the bottom mud. Heros is a genus of cichlids. Wajpamheros is the sister genus of Theraps .
