history

Peace Dale (also Peacedale ) was founded around 1800 by the industrialist Rowland Hazard (1763-1835) from South Kingstown, who named the settlement after his wife Mary Peace. The spread of carding machines in Rhode Island is said to go back to Hazard , which he used for the first time in wool processing in 1805 , and thus founded his Narragansett Cotton Manufacturing Company , which remained in the family until 1918 under various names. In 1814, Hazard was the first in Rhode Island to use narrow power looms - the company later boasted that it had used them successfully for the first time - and brought all wool processing operations under one roof.

The nearby town of Wakefield was originally called McCoon's Mill after a tobacco mill installed there. In 1820 Hazard named the town after the English town of Wakefield because he had friends there.

The center of Wakefield has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Wakefield Historic District since 1996 under number 87000493 .
