geography

Waldbach origin

Source of origin of the forest stream

The forest creek rises west of Lahn in forest stream originating at the foot of the Dachstein range . It is one of the largest karst springs in Austria. On average, around 3100 liters of water emerge from the spring every second. The spring discharge fluctuates strongly, however, it can rise to over 10,000 l / s in the event of heavy rainfall or snowmelt and decrease to a few 10 l / s in the event of prolonged drought. The spring water comes from the Hallstatt Glacier on the one hand, and from the Hinterer Gosau Lake on the other . It flows through a cave system to the source of the forest stream, where it reappears. From the lake to the source, the water needs around 165 hours.

course

After its source, it falls down the Waldbachstrub into the Echerntal . It is a gorge formed by ice age glaciers . It is bordered by vertical rock walls. The Lauterbach flows into the Waldbach from the left as a 150 m high waterfall . The Waldbach flows into the Hallstätter See in Lahn .

power plant

In 2012/13, a hydropower plant with an output of 4.1 megawatts was built in the Echerntal for 6.5 million euros. Near the original source, around 1500 liters of water per second (one third of the total amount of water) are diverted and fed to the power plant around 330 meters below via a high-pressure pipe. The power station is owned by 51% by the Austrian Federal Forests and 49% by the market town of Hallstatt.

art

Waldbach in the wild and romantic Echerntal

Numerous famous painters of Austrian Romanticism such as Friedrich Gauermann (1807–1862) or Johann Fischbach (1797–1871) or Rudolf von Alt (1812–1905) painted the wild and romantic Echerntal with the Waldbach.
