Waldemar Carpenel

Waldemar Carpenel ( French: Geldemar Carpenel , Latin: Guademarus Carpinellus ; † September 7, 1101 near Ramla ) was an Occitan crusader and lord of Haifa in the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

Waldemar took part in the First Crusade in the entourage of Count Raimund von St. Gilles . After the conquest of Jerusalem by the Crusaders, Raimund sent him to Jaffa . The first regent of Jerusalem, Godfrey of Bouillon , enfeoffed Waldemar on his deathbed with the city and rule of Haifa , which Tankred had conquered of Tiberias shortly before. Tankred was angry about the mortgage, shortly after Gottfried's death he drove Waldemar from Haifa, who withdrew to St. Abraham's Castle . Waldemar complained to the new king of Jerusalem, Baldwin I , about his expulsion and managed to get Haifa back when Tankred was appointed regent of Antioch in 1101, on condition that he had to return the fief if Tankred were to reclaim it within 15 months .

Waldemar was one of the barons who campaigned for the reinstatement of the Patriarch Dagobert of Pisa .

In September 1101 he took part in the royal army in the victorious First Battle of Ramla against the Fatimids . Waldemar was killed in the battle.

With his death Haifa formally fell back to Tankred, but no later than 1103 it was given to Rohard I, possibly a son or relative of Waldemar.
