Waldemar III. ( Danish Valdemar III ) (* 1314 ; † 1364 ) was 1326-1329 King of Denmark . In the years 1325-1326 and 1329-1364 he was as Waldemar V Duke of Schleswig .

Life

Waldemar III. was the son of Duke Erich II of Schleswig (son of Waldemar IV and grandson of Erich I ) and Adelheid von Holstein (daughter of Count Heinrich I of Holstein-Rendsburg ). He was married to Rixa von Schwerin, daughter of Count Guncelin von Schwerin and Tecklenburg († 1327), they had the following children:

  • Waldemar († 1360), Hereditary Prince of Schleswig
  • Heinrich († 1375), Duke of Schleswig

In 1326, at the age of eleven, Waldemar was raised to the rank of King of Denmark by his uncle and guardian Gerhard the Great in place of Christoph II . With that, Gerhard was practically the regent of Denmark. For this he had the underage King Waldemar enfeoff himself with the Duchy of Schleswig . Waldemar laid down the Danish crown as early as 1330 because he was unable to defend it against his opponents, the sons of Christopher II. Christoph's youngest son Waldemar IV. Atterdag succeeded his father on the throne after Gerhard's murder in 1340.

Trivia

King Waldemar III. must not be confused with " Waldemar von Schleswig ", who is sometimes also Waldemar III. is called because the Latin inscription on his tombstone reads:

Waldemarus Tertius Rex Daniae, Filius Waldemari Secundi
Waldemar III, King of Denmark, son of Waldemar II. 

Also, the king may not with Waldemar III. , Duke of Schleswig.
