The following list contains an overview of the Jarles and Dukes of the Duchy of Schleswig and South Jutland . Due to the division of countries , several rulers can be listed in the same period (for example in royal and Gottorfian shares).

Schauenburger
(After the Abel family of the Ulfingers died out, the Schauenburg counts of Holstein also became dukes in Schleswig)
- 1375–1386 Heinrich der Eiserne and Nikolaus ruled parts of the duchy together as pawns, but were never enfeoffed
- 1386–1404 Gerhard VI.
- 1404–1427 Henry IV was never enfeoffed with the duchy, but pledger of large parts
- 1427–1459 Adolf VIII of Holstein as Duke Adolf I of Schleswig
Oldenburg
(After two of the three Schauenburg lines became extinct, Danish kings from the House of Oldenburg became dukes of Schleswig and Holstein in personal union)
- 1460–1481 Christian I , Treaty of Ripen
- 1481-1533 Frederick I gives the Duchy of Holstein to his brother John I from.
- 1533–1544 Christian III. King of Denmark, introduced the Reformation ; Tripartite division of Schleswig and Holstein.
Oldenburg, Gottorf line
(the dukes from the house of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf ruled in the Gottorf parts)
- 1544–1586 Adolf II.
- 1586–1587 Friedrich II.
- 1587–1590 Philip
- 1590–1616 Johann Adolf completed the Renaissance building of Gottorf Castle
- 1616–1659 Frederick III. achieved independence from Denmark in 1658.
- 1659–1694 Christian-Albrecht founded the University of Kiel in 1665 .
- 1694–1702 Friedrich IV. Was the last duke to reside on Gottorf.
- 1702–1713 Karl Friedrich . The councilors of Magnus von Wedderkop and then Georg Heinrich von Görtz ruled for him .
