Valentin Vitalievich Rumyantsev , Russian Валенти́н Вита́льевич Румя́нцев , English transcription Valentin Vitalievich Rumyantsev, (born July 19, 1921 in the Saratov Governorate ; † June 10, 2007 in Moscow ) was a Soviet mathematician and mechanic .

Rumyantsev studied at the State University in Saratov with the degree in 1945 and received his doctorate in 1948 at the Institute of Mechanics (IMAS) of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow with Nikolai Guryevich Cheetayev and habilitated in 1953 (Russian doctorate). From 1961 to 1964 he was head of the analytical mechanics department at IMAS. From 1965 he was a senior he was from 1956 professor of theoretical mechanics at Lomonossow University . From 1986 he headed the Mechanics Department at the Computer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CCAS). He was there from 1965 as a senior scientist and from 1973 headed the Stability Theory and Mechanics of Control Systems department.

In 2004 he received the Lyapunov Prize . He was a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and the Russian Academy of Sciences (corresponding member from 1970, full member from 1992), received the State Prize of the USSR and the Russian Federation. He also received the Humboldt Research Award .

From 1981 to 2007 he was editor of the Russian journal Applied Mathematics and Mechanics .

Rumjanzew dealt with the control and stability of dynamic systems, for example for space travel.
