Valery Nizimov Petrov (born in Meworach ; born April 22, 1920 in Sofia , Bulgaria ; † August 27, 2014 there ) was a Bulgarian writer , playwright , poet , screenwriter and translator .

Life

Valery Petrov was the son of Nisim Meworach and Maria Petrowa. While his father was a lawyer, politician, Bulgarian ambassador to the US and UN envoy, his mother taught languages ​​as a teacher at an international school. Petrov attended the Italian school in Sofia. After his parents separated, he lived with his mother and took her last name. During his school days he published his first poems. He finished his medical studies at the University of Sofia in 1944 , after which he worked as a doctor in autumn and winter. He spent the rest of World War II as a war reporter for Radio Sofia .

After the war he co-founded the magazine Стършел and worked as a journalist and deputy editor-in-chief from 1945 to 1962. From 1957 to 1960 he worked as a press and cultural attaché for the Bulgarian embassy in Rome, during which time he traveled through the USA, Switzerland and France. At the same time, however, he was still working as a doctor in Rila Monastery . On his return to Bulgaria, he became an editor for the film studio Бояна and for the publishing house Български писател .

Since then he has also worked as a screenwriter for feature films such as The Whole City Seeks Vera , Knight Without Armor , and My Friend, the Pirate , and has written plays such as Когато розите танцуват and Сън while continuing to publish books of poetry. He also worked as a translator of works from English, German, Russian, Italian and Spanish. He translated tragedies and comedies by William Shakespeare , Faust by Goethe and poems by Juana Inés de la Cruz into Bulgarian.

The Petrov Ridge has been named after him since 2014 , a mountain ridge in Graham Land in Antarctica.
