Valery Sergeyevich Popov (musician)

Valery Sergejewitsch Popow ( Russian Валерий Сергеевич Попов ; born September 9, 1937 in Ilyinskaya , Moscow Oblast ) is a Russian bassoonist and professor .

Life

Popow's father was a trumpeter and his role model, so he first learned the trumpet until he switched to the bassoon in 1957 at the age of 20. Two years later he got his first job in the orchestra. In 1960 Popov began studying at the Moscow Conservatory with R. Terekhin.

From 1962 to 1988 he was principal bassoonist in the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra . During this time he played with conductors and soloists such as Kirill Kondrashin , Gennady Rozhdestvensky , Valery Gergiev , Charles Munch , Zubin Mehta , Lorin Maazel , Kurt Masur , Yehudi Menuhin , Isaac Stern , David Oistrach , Emil Gilels and Mstislav Rostropovich .

From 1988 Popov played in the State Symphony Capella of Russia .

The composers Sofia Gubaidulina , Edison Denisov and Alfred Schnittke composed pieces especially for him.

Popov has been teaching at the Moscow Conservatory since 1971 and was appointed professor in 1991. He has given master classes in Japan, France, Turkey, China and Korea. He was also a juror at international music competitions.
