The pilgrimage church of the Suffering Savior in Dornau is a Roman Catholic branch church of the Lower Austrian parish Altenmarkt an der Triesting . The pilgrimage church on the Via Sacra , the pilgrimage route from Vienna to Mariazell in Styria, is located in the cadastral community of Thenneberg .

history

In 1637, four Viennese pilgrims from Mariazell had a stone statue erected with a statue of the Suffering Savior, which subsequently became a stop on the pilgrimage from Vienna to Mariazell. In 1764 Jakob Pach , the last abbot of Klein-Mariazell (1752–1782), first had a wooden chapel built after a vow , and soon afterwards a stone chapel , which was consecrated in 1766. In 1773 the chapel was enlarged and in 1782 the Emperor Joseph II made it a local parish. According to a government ordinance of 1808, the parish was recognized as dispensable and the Altenmarkt parish was assigned as a branch.

The church has been renovated in several phases since 2008.

description

Interior of the pilgrimage church

The late baroque domed church has a double tower facade with niche figures. Inside there are two rooms with pendent domes . The rich frescoes come from the Paul Troger school ( Johann Bergl , Josef Ignaz Mildorfer and Johann Jakob Zeiller ). The first dome is decorated with the Adoration of the Lamb, the second with the Last Judgment. The end of the choir shows God the Father enthroned on clouds and with angels at his side. The pulpit was added during the Rococo around 1770 and the side altars only in the middle of the 19th century. The organ is probably made by the Viennese organ builder Josef Loyp in 1857.

Scheder monument

The Scheder monument east of the church is a memorial column with statues of St. Leonhard, Ferdinand, Sebastian and Madonna. It was built in 1850 and is dedicated to the courageous soldier Ferdinand Scheder, who was born on May 7, 1824 as the twelfth child of the married couple Joseph and Magdalena Scheder. He was seriously injured in the Battle of Szolnok on January 25th, 1849 and died on February 28th, 1849. Because of his extraordinary achievement, he received the gold medal for bravery shortly before his death.
