Sanctuary of Banchette
The Sanctuary of Banchette is a Marian place of worship in the locality of Banchette, in the municipality of Bioglio ( Province of Biella ). It is located near the municipality of Pettinengo .
Together with the pilgrimage church on the Mazzucco ( Camandona ), the Nostra Signora della Brughiera ( Trivero ) and the Brugarola ( Ailoche ), it belongs to the group of smaller pilgrimage sites in the Biella area , which can be found along the walking and pilgrimage routes of CoEUR and the Path from San Carlo are located.
It is located in the natural area of Quargnasca (Park Rovella) at an altitude of 675 m and it is an extradiocesan pilgrimage church administered by the Barnabites from Genoa . At the back of the church there is a building that was built in the first half of the 18th century thanks to the donation of a Spanish officer. Today this structure is used as a holiday home.
According to an old legend, the church was built to redress the sacrilegious act of a madman who struck the fresco of the Virgin on a pillar with a stone. The fresco was therefore called "Madonna with the blue spots" (in Piedmontese Madonna dal bull ). It's still in the church.
The current building was built by the Barnabites over the remains of the old church, which was used as a hospital during a plague epidemic in 1630 .
The 16th century church was restored at the beginning of the 20th century. Only the facade and parts of the aisles are original.
The pilgrimage church is located on a hill in a forest at the foot of a mountain (Monte Rovella) and near the Quargnasca stream. It is a famous pilgrimage site.
