Walter A. Koch spent his childhood in Rostock until 1945 . After graduating from high school in Hamm in 1955, he studied English , Romance studies , East Asian studies and general and comparative linguistics in Mainz , Neuchâtel and Münster from 1955 to 1961 . In 1962 he received his doctorate with the thesis "On the theory of sound change". In 1965 he was teacher in the high school service in Münster and was from 1968 to 1999 as a professor at the University of Bochum Professor of English and Semiotics held. In 1984 the interdisciplinary Bochum Semiotic Colloquium (BSC) was founded.

Koch came up with the idea that the recurrence of features of the phylogeny of language in other geneses can be expected. He tries to draw conclusions about the language evolution from parallels in language developments that can be observed today, such as that of children or that of Creole languages (so-called "echogenesis").

Koch lives in Bochum.
