Walter A. McDougall

Walter Allan McDougall (born December 3, 1946 in Washington, DC ) is an American historian .

Life

McDougall attended New Trier Township High School in Winnetka , Illinois , where he graduated in 1964. He then studied at Amherst College , where he received a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in 1968 . From 1968 to 1970 he served in the United States Army and served as an artillery sergeant in the Vietnam War . After retiring from the Army with an Honorable Discharge , he continued his studies at the University of Chicago . Here he received in 1971 a Master of Arts and doctorate in 1974 Ph.D.His doctoral supervisor was William Hardy McNeill .

From 1975, McDougall taught at the University of California, Berkeley , first from 1975 to 1983 as an assistant professor , then from 1983 to 1987 as an associate professor and finally from 1987 to 1988 as a full professor. In 1988 he moved to the University of Pennsylvania , where he has been a professor of history ever since. He also holds the chair of the Alloy-Ansin Professor of International Relations .

In 1986 and again in 1991 he was a Resident Scholar at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University . For his book ... the Heavens and the Earth: A Political History of the Space Age , he received the Pulitzer Prize for History in April 1986 . In October 1986, he received the Dexter Prize of the Society for the History of Technology . In May 1998 he was elected to the Society of American Historians .

McDougall is married with two children.
