Based in the Department of Science, Technology and Society at the University of Virginia , SHOT is the first international society for the history of technology . In a sense, it forms the umbrella organization for the various technical and historical communities that are often members of SHOT. To promote the history of technology, the society publishes the quarterly journal Technology and Culture and awards numerous grants , prizes and awards.

profile

The Society for the History of Technology is a subsidiary of the American Historical Association and was founded in 1958 by the US technical historian Melvin Kranzberg , who also played a key role in founding the sister company International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC) in 1968 . The Society for the History of Technology has around 1500 members. The aim of the company is to promote historical studies of technology and the relationship between technology and politics, economy, work, the environment, the public, science and art. It pursues its goal by holding conferences, awarding scholarships and prizes, and publishing specialist journals. It also maintains a worldwide network of scientists to research the history of technology. On its 50th anniversary, the Society held major conferences in Washington, DC and Lisbon . Among the presidents of the society were renowned scientists such as Carroll W. Pursell , Alex Roland and Robert C. Post .

Publications

The main publication of SHOT is the quarterly journal Technology and Culture . The journal, founded in 1958, is dedicated to a variety of humanities and technical disciplines: history, sociology, mechanical engineering, law, architecture, anthropology, economics, philosophy and literature. It features essays and commentary on public affairs related to the interplay of technology and culture, reviews of museums and exhibitions, and around forty reviews in each issue. The journal also regularly deals with a key topic such as water technology in the Netherlands . Technology and Culture has around 1,500 private and 1,000 institutional subscribers.

In addition, the company publishes a quarterly newsletter with current reports on technology-historical topics, congresses and technology historians. Reports on activities, publications and award ceremonies of SHOT are also included in the periodical. The newsletter is available online. In addition, SHOT is in cooperation with the American Historical Association, a series of booklets (booklets) under the title Historical Perspectives on Technology, Society, and Culture out.

Awards and grants

The Society for the History of Technology awards four scholarships and awards nine prizes or awards that cover a wide range of engineering history topics, from outstanding research to the editing of historical texts to museum exhibitions. The society regards the Leonardo da Vinci Medal as its highest distinction . It also offers travel subsidies for attending its general meeting or congresses.

Scholarships

Melvin Kranzberg Dissertation Fellowship
The $ 4,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a doctoral student for the preparation of a dissertation in the field of the history of technology. In 2008, for example, the award went to Robert C. Gardner for his work entitled: Growing Trees in the Sand Hills: The Nature and Culture of a Technological Forest . The award bears the name of the technology historian and SHOT founding member Melvin Kranzberg .

Brooke Hindle Postdoctoral Fellowship
The $ 10,000 research grant is awarded annually for academic work in the field of the history of technology. The award honors the extensive work of the historian Brooke Hindle (1918–2001) for the Society for the History of Technology.

SHOT-NASA Fellowship
The grant of $ 17,000 is awarded for an academic year in which a pre- or post-doctoral research paper on the history of space technology is to be carried out. The funding is supported by NASA's History Division .

Derek John de Solla Price , 1976 winner of the Leonardo da Vinci Medal

International Scholars
The funding serves the international technical and historical community. In particular, non-US technology historians should be able to participate in meetings and congresses and to participate in the organization of the Society for the History of Technology. In 2008/2009, for example, scholars from India, Chile, Korea and Switzerland were supported.

Honourings and prices

Leonardo da Vinci Medal
The Leonardo da Vinci Medal is the highest honor of the Society for the History of Technology. The winners included Abbott Payson Usher , Melvin Kranzberg , Joseph Needham , Lewis Mumford , Bern Dibner , Derek John de Solla Price , Otto Mayr and Heinz Zemanek .

Sidney Edelstein Prize
This award consists of a cash prize and a plate engraved with a coat of arms. It is awarded annually for an outstanding scientific work on the history of technology that was published (or translated into English) no more than three years ago.
