Walter Armbrust (born October 17, 1882 in Hamburg , † April 9, 1941 in Eisenach ) was a German organist and conductor .

Life

Walter Armbrust was the son of the organ virtuoso Carl Armbrust († 1896) and his wife Thusnelde née Faißt († 1893). His maternal grandfather was the composer Immanuel Faißt .

After attending the Realgymnasium in Hamburg, Walter Armbrust attended the Princely Schwarzburg Conservatory in Sondershausen from 1900 to 1903 under Carl Schroeder . In 1903 he went to Leipzig as a student of Paul Homeyer and worked in Dresden as an orchestra conductor in the concert field. From 1904 he was in Hamburg, like his father, a leading organ virtuoso and orchestra conductor.

In 1920 he went back to Dresden as director of the Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1922 he was appointed municipal conductor in Eisenach . A year later Walter Armbrust became director of the Singakademie. In 1924 he was appointed municipal music director in recognition of his services to Eisenach's musical life . As such, he conducted the municipal orchestra formed in 1919, which he directed until his death in 1941. Walter Armbrust was married to Elise nee Michow.
