Walter Bodmer (historian)
Walter Bodmer (born November 11, 1896 in Ottenbach ; † September 10, 1989 in Zurich ) was a Swiss industrialist and economic historian .
Life
Walter Bodmer grew up as the son of the co-owner of the silk weaving mill Bodmer & Hürlimann in Ottenbach, where he spent his childhood until 1907. He attended the secondary school in Zurich and from 1915 studied chemistry , physics and geology at the universities of Zurich, Bern and Geneva. After receiving his doctorate in Bern in 1922, he ran a textile dye factory in Como and the family business in Fossano . In 1942 he returned to Switzerland, where he initially worked in the Army and House Section of the Swiss Army . 1944–1953 he was secretary of the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel .
In addition to his professional activity, Bodmer already carried out research on Swiss migration and economic history in Italy and became a pioneer in this field. In 1960 his main work, Swiss Industrial History, was published . In addition, he repeatedly dealt with questions of business ethics in his publications. 1962 awarded him the University of Bern , the honorary doctorate .
