Walter Byron (actor)
Walter Byron (born June 11, 1899 in Leicester , Leicestershire , England as Walter Clarence Butler , † March 2, 1972 in Signal Hill , California ) was an English-born American film actor of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
Byron made more than 60 films in Hollywood between 1926 and 1942. He is known for the unfinished silent film Queen Kelly from 1929, where he played the male lead alongside Gloria Swanson under the direction of Erich von Stroheim . Otherwise he was often only subscribed to supporting roles in larger film productions. In the early sound film era he appeared alongside Myrna Loy and Barbara Kent in the role of George Osbourne in Chester M. Franklin's 1932 filming of Vanity Fair and in 1936 played the role of Sir Francis Walsingham alongside Katharine Hepburn in Mary of Scotland . After his film roles became increasingly insignificant, he ended his screen career in 1942.
