Walter Ehrlich

Walter Ehrlich (born May 16, 1896 in Berlin ; died December 26, 1968 in Bad Ragaz , Switzerland ) was a German philosopher .

Life

Walter Ehrlich was born on May 16, 1896 as the son of the businessman Jakob Ehrlich and his wife Nina Ehrlich, née Flatow, in Berlin. He attended the Royal French Gymnasium in Berlin until Easter 1914 . This was followed by a degree in mathematics and theoretical physics at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg . Ehrlich joined the military in 1915 and took part in the Eastern campaign until October 1915 . Ehrlich contracted a protracted illness that lasted until the end of summer 1917. In October 1917 he enrolled in philosophy at the University of Berlin ; he broke off this course at the end of 1918. In Berlin Ehrlich heard lectures by Professors Ernst Cassirer , Max Dessoir , Benno Erdmann , Alois Riehl , Friedrich Julius Schmidt and Ernst Troeltsch . From February 1919 he studied philosophy and literature as a full student at the University of Heidelberg with Heinrich Maier , Heinrich Rickert , Hans Driesch , Karl Jaspers , Max von Waldberg , Friedrich Gundolf (Friedrich Leopold Gundelfinger), Friedrich Neumann and Leonardo Olschki . The philosopher Heinrich Maier, who has been teaching at the University of Heidelberg since 1918, provided inspiration and support for Ehrlich's dissertation The Concept of Freedom in Kant and Schopenhauer .
