The Walter Hand House - today as Shadow Mountain Ranch known - is the main building of a former farm at the Angola Road in Cornwall , New York in the United States . It was built around 1870 and was originally used as a farmhouse and summer pension , as Cornwall was a popular summer place to stay at the time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1996 .

description

The house is on a slight hill with a view to the west of Schunemunk Mountain . The property is the remainder of an originally much larger farm that has since been divided. The property includes six other buildings, all of which are considered contributing .

The house is a two and a half story clapboard building with Gothic decorations , a molded cornice and a simple frieze on the eaves. The gable roof is covered with wooden shingles, at both ends of the ridge there is a chimney made of brick. There is a two-story side wing on the southern side.

A one-story veranda runs the entire length of the east facade and is guarded by a flat roof, the features of which, such as cornice and frieze, are similar to the eaves of the house itself. Between the posts is a railing decorated with fretwork.

Inside, the floor plan is aligned with the centrally located hall. Much of the interior and decorations are original. The attic , which is used to accommodate summer guests, has been completely expanded.

The six outbuildings, which were built around the same time as the main house, are located a little down the slope at the rear. These are smaller two-story stables, a former kitchen house that was later converted into living space, a carriage house with original doors and equipment, and a shed.

history

The house was built by Walter Hand around 1870. This belonged to a long-established Cornwall family. Hand grew apples and responded to New Yorkers ' growing interest in spending the summer in the country by expanding the attic to accommodate such guests.

Since then the owner has changed several times. More recently, it was bought by the owners of Cromwell Manor , which is about two kilometers east on Angola Road. They manage the property as a bed and breakfast .
