Cromwell Manor or David Cromwell House or Joseph Sutherland House is an estate on Angola Road in Cornwall , New York , just south of US Highway 9W . It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since June 3, 1996 . Of the four-building property, two are of importance: the main house, built in 1820 in a classicist style and expanded in 1840, and a cottage from 1779 called The Chimneys , the original home on the site.

At the time of its construction, Cromwell Manor was one of the first larger houses in rural Cornwall, more luxurious than a farmhouse and one of the first brick- built neo-classical buildings in the city. After being inhabited by the Cromwell family for more than a century, it was sold and turned into a retirement home for retired teachers. Currently (2009) it is used as a bed and breakfast .

description

There are four contributing properties on the approximately three hectare property : the main house, The Chimneys , a guest house and a toilet block. There is also a well and a garage on the property, but these are not considered contributing as they date from the 20th century.

The main house is a two-story brick building with five bays . A portico runs across the entire front of the building and is supported by six large square columns. The house is on a low rise and faces the mountains of the Black Rock Forest in the Hudson Highlands . The roof is flat with a cornice and a flat frieze on the eaves. There is a fireplace in each of the four corners. A two-story, rectangular annex is connected to the north end and a glazed terrace runs the full length of the rear, west side.

Window sills and lintels are made of sandstone on both the front and the rear . The main entrance has a composite, glazed door, which is decorated with decorative wooden elements, side windows let light into the interior. On the flanks of the entrance are pilasters that support a molded main cornice that extends to the second floor.

The Chimneys

Inside, the houses are arranged around a central main hall. Many of the original features are still intact, including the moldings and architraves and the marble fireplace surrounds. Sliding doors divide the audience room.

The Chimneys , the original home of Joseph Sutherland, is a verschindeltes in post and beam construction created cottage on a stone base. It consists of two wings. The main wing is a one and a half story building, the side wing on the south side is one story. The interior has been extensively renovated since then, the stable door-like entrance and the fireplace surrounds are original. A non-contributing fountain is in front of the building.

The guest house, a post-and-beam house with a gable roof, is to the west of the main house, the toilet block is to the southwest. The modern garage is located northeast of the main house.

history

The Sutherland family, one of the oldest in Cornwall, New York, bought most of the land that is now the Angola Road in the 18th century. The houses of Daniel and David Sutherland are further northeast, closer to the center of the village. Joseph Sutherland built the small cottage on the site around 1779. He ran an inn and a shoemaker's workshop in the building .

David Cromwell was a local merchant and farmer and, according to some accounts, a descendant of Oliver Cromwell , who overthrew the British monarchy in the mid-17th century, bought the property from the Sutherlands in 1830. He lived in their house until around 1835, when the construction of the main house was completed. This larger house was a step away from the construction of such houses in Cornwall until then, which was adapted to what the farmer could make on his surrounding land. Cromwell's house also stood out for the use of brick.

The guest house was built in 1840 and the outhouse around 1890. Cromwell Manor remained in the family until 1941 when Emily Cromwell sold it to the Association of Retired Teachers . This used it as a retirement home for retired teachers from New York City . In 1988 the organization sold the property to the current owners.
